Oakland has released
veteran wide receiver Seth Roberts, in a move that saves the team a reported
$4.8 million with no dead money counting towards the salary cap. The move was
predictable after the Raiders spent big money on Antonio Brown and Tyrell
Williams in the offseason.
Roberts first joined the
Raiders as undrafted free agent following the 2014 NFL Draft. In his first seasons with the team, he established a decent
rapport with Derek Carr as the third option behind Michael Crabtree and Amari
Cooper. His best moment with the team came in 2016, where he caught a 41-yard
walk-off TD pass in overtime to beat the Buccaneers.
In 2018, with both
Crabtree and Cooper gone, Roberts was forced into a starting role opposite
Jordy Nelson. Once a fan favorite, “Dread Pirate” Roberts struggled with consistency and drops.
In his place, the team
has added WR Ryan Grant. Grant spent his first four years with Washington as a
role player after being selected in the 5th round of the 2015 NFL
Draft. His best year came in 2017, where he hauled in 45 receptions for 573
yards and found the endzone four times. Last season, he signed with the Colts
and recorded 35 catches for 334 yards and one touchdown. Grant struggled with ineffectiveness
and injuries during his time in Indianapolis. In Oakland, he’ll compete with JJ
Nelson and Marcell Ateman for snaps behind Brown and Williams.
